La Ventona: Routes, Culture and Holiday Apartments

A route entitled “La Ventona – Sel de la Carrera – Pombo – Tablada” connects these four place names in a shared route.

Routes through Luena

The circular route “Barrios y caseríos de Luena” passes through Sel de la Carrera, Urdiales, Cazpurrion, Bustasur, Vozpornoche and La Ventona. It is 18.37 kilometres long and designed as a loop. A short route from Entrambasmestas reaches the farmhouses of La Ventona. Different lengths and itineraries make it possible to compare various day stages.

In the municipality of Luena, a 14-kilometre route leads to Puerto del Escudo and can be travelled by vehicle or bicycle. The Vía Romana del Escudo route follows a ridge with extensive views to the east and west. The traditional Pasiegos livestock huts are of particular ethnographic interest in the municipality of Luena and shape the landscape around the settlements.

On the “Sel de Haya y Sel del Cedo” route, individual sections of the path turn into an animal trail after about 50 metres.

Culture and Historical Heritage

In the municipality of Luena, significant remains of a Roman road have been preserved between Entrambasmuestas and Sel de la Carrera. In San Miguel de Luena stands the 17th-century Los Remedios hermitage, with an interesting altarpiece.

In the surrounding area of La Ventona, the Santiago Apóstol Church in Entrambasmestas dates from the late 17th century. Also in the surrounding area of La Ventona, the San Andrés Church in San Andrés de Luena dates from the 18th century and has a Baroque altarpiece.

In the surrounding area of La Ventona, near Ocejo, lies the El Churrón cave, with Palaeolithic paintings, calcareous formations and medieval pottery finds. The Mojón de Pedruecos is also located in the surrounding area of La Ventona: it is a stone marker approximately 2.5 metres high that was already classified as old in 1689.

Canyon and Caves

The Sel del Ceo Canyon is accessed from the road to Puerto del Escudo via a turn-off to Barrio La Ventona and then along a paved track; after the first bend, there is plenty of space for parking. During the descent through the Sel del Ceo Canyon, successive drops and small waterfalls are negotiated with a total of 11 rappels. Winter is recommended for descending the Sel del Ceo Canyon, provided that water flow and weather conditions permit it.

In the area of Ocejo, a narrow cave gallery is said to carry an active watercourse with gravel, rubble and silt; there is also said to be a small waterfall there.
