Guardamino: Nature, Trails and History
The characteristic rural landscape of Guardamino consists predominantly of meadows and small kitchen gardens, some of which are still preserved around certain houses. For your personal travel planning, meadows, kitchen gardens and wooded slopes can be considered as different aspects of the landscape.
Nature
Along the Guardamino circular trail, oak, ash and chestnut trees can be seen on the properties; on the nearby slopes, patches of Cantabrian holm-oak woodland also grow at the foot of the surrounding mountain peaks. Deer are regularly found in the area around the Guardamino circular trail; foxes, wild boar, stone martens, hedgehogs and various rodents also live there. You can weigh the natural features separately when planning, without combining them into a single landscape type.
Region
Ramales de la Victoria, the municipality that includes Guardamino, is considered a gateway to the Parque Natural de los Collados del Asón.
Trails
The PR-S 22 Sendero Vuelta al Moro circular trail leads from Ramales de la Victoria via Valle del Silencio, Zorrocillas, Guardamino and Alto del Castillo back to Ramales de la Victoria. It is 10 km long, takes approximately 3 hours and 45 minutes, has a moderate difficulty level and involves around 550 metres of ascent and descent. The circular trail is shown on the Spanish National Topographic Map sheets 60-I (Ramales de la Victoria) and 60-III (Concha).
The Callejomadero via ferrata includes descending sections, a 40-metre-long free-hanging abseil section, a Tibetan bridge and an exit that can only be reached via the via ferrata after the abseil. The circular trail and the via ferrata represent different types of activity; you can weigh their length, duration, elevation gain and technical elements separately when planning your trip.
Culture
The Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora in Guardamino consists of a single rectangular nave divided into three sections and covered by a ribbed vault with five keystones. The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Guardamino dates from the 17th century. Its present form is the result of a reconstruction carried out in 1640 under the direction of Andrés de Landeral; work was undertaken, among other things, on the vault, the walls and the bell gable. The 19th-century neoclassical high altar contains paintings from the 14th and 16th centuries, including a Gothic painting from the 14th century.
History
In spring 1839, during the First Carlist War, the Battle of Guardamino took place in Ramales and Guardamino. Baldomero Espartero's liberal troops defeated the Carlist army commanded by General Maroto.
