Enterrías: Cultural History on the Monterón
Accommodation in Enterrías
The Museo Casa de las Doñas in Enterrías is an ethnographic complex that depicts life in Liébana at the end of the 19th century. Its history becomes tangible not only through dates, but also through the preserved construction and the rooms of the house. This connects the historical context with concrete insights into everyday life in the past. This chronology becomes particularly vivid when the construction, rooms and preserved furnishings are considered together. The visit therefore combines the building as an object with traces of its former use.
Culture and History
The Casa de las Doñas is an example of the typical Lebaniego farmhouse style, built from local stone and wood. The guided tour presents restored rooms from a former farmhouse with original elements dating from the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. The architecture, furnishings and guided tour together convey the history of the house and its development over time. The preserved elements make the historical span tangible through specific rooms and furnishings rather than leaving it abstract.
The parish church of El Salvador de Enterrías retains two pre-Romanesque latticeworks. One of them is now located on the front of the main altar. Thus, the church interior brings together the majority of the surviving latticeworks and the specifically identified present-day location of one individual example.
The former Chapel of San Pedro at the Matorrera de San Pedro was approximately nine metres long and ten metres wide. The Ordenanzas de Enterrias, Vada y Dobarganes of 1744 regulated the distribution of irrigation water from the Monterón River. This site therefore brings together a historic building and a traditional regulation governing the use of water. The dimensions are expressly approximate and refer to the former chapel. The water ordinance complements the architectural reference with a historical set of regulations that places the river in the context of a communally used resource.
Enterrías is first mentioned in the Cartulary of the Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana on 9 August 1284; the entry concerns a serna in San Pedro de Montero. Here, the place name appears together with a specific date and the stated connection to San Pedro de Montero. This provides a written historical reference to the place alongside the histories of its buildings and church.
Landscape and Trails
The Monterón River flows directly past Enterrías. The Matorrera de San Pedro, a stand of oak trees with hazel bushes, lies along its course. The river thus provides the geographical link between the village and the named woodland. Naming the oaks and hazel bushes describes the vegetation of the stand more precisely than merely giving a place name.
The Pico Jano route passes by the Enterrías reservoir. The short PR-S6 hiking trail leads uphill from Bores to Enterrías. This provides different points of reference for planning your own day: one route associated with the reservoir and a short uphill trail starting from Bores.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Enterrías, travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions can be compared separately on the respective offer pages. This information is part of your own travel planning and remains independent of the historical and landscape features of the place.
