Culture and history

The present-day building of San Martín Church has a nave covered by a star-ribbed vault, four side chapels – two on each side –, a round tower at the western end and a polygonal apse forming the chancel. The side chapel on the Epistle side contains a small 17th-century carved figure of the Virgen de la Higuera. During a visit, the overall design of the church and the smaller individual work can be viewed separately.

The Ermita de San Antonio in Carriazo is located on the Camino de Santiago. Its Baroque façade has a door framed by panelled pilasters, along with a broken pediment and a bell gable. The Casona del Marqués de Valbuena in Carriazo dates from the second half of the 17th century.

Carriazo offers walking routes where you can admire the manor house and chapel of the La Roza family. The chapel in the La Roza complex houses a 17th-century sculpture of the Virgen de la Higuera. The La Roza complex also includes two entrance portals and an angular coat of arms belonging to the Solano Setién family.

Trails and landscape

Carriazo lies on the Río Herrera stream. The El Tirado y Calobro route provides access to Pico Funegra through a mid-mountain landscape with native beech and oak groves. For planning purposes, the walking routes around historic sites and the landscape route can be treated as separate focal points.

Festivals and community traditions

The Cabalgata de Reyes de Carriazo, Castanedo y Galizano brings together three towns in Ribamontán al Mar. The tradition began in 1966 and is maintained by the three village communities.

The San Roque festival on 16 August in Carriazo includes folklore, romerías and a chocolatada. During the San Martín festival in Carriazo, residents gather in the church and stay for a shared meal and wine.
