Barcenaciones – Churches, Festivals and the Paseo Las Escubias

Barcenaciones is a rural ensemble of great ethnographic value that preserves traditional Cantabrian architecture. Culture

The parish church of San Juan Bautista in Barcenaciones was rebuilt in the 17th century over a medieval predecessor. Its two-bay nave, a square main chapel with ribbed vaults and an exterior staircase leading to the bell gable form part of its architectural description. The church is a Romanist work completed around 1625.

The Church of San Benito in Barcenaciones was built at the end of the 16th century. The Chapel of San Benito is a 17th-century building with a rectangular floor plan, a gabled roof and a Classical main altarpiece from the early 17th century.

Festivals and Dates

The festival in honour of San Benito takes place in Barcenaciones every year on 11 July. In June, the Corpus Christi festival is celebrated in Barcenaciones.

The San Benito livestock fair takes place at the Braña de San Benito in Barcenaciones. It presents cattle, sheep, goats, horses and donkeys.

Nature and Trails

The Paseo Las Escubias is a circular route along the Saja River that is less than 2 kilometres long and takes approximately 30 minutes. The route is mostly paved, completely level and has no significant inclines. The combination of approximate duration and level terrain describes the route differently from a mere walk around the built-up streets of the village.

Along the Paseo Las Escubias, the route passes through a forest with typical Cantabrian riverside vegetation, including poplars, laurels, hazelnut trees, oaks and chestnuts.
