Tejina: Festival Culture, Folk Theatre and Church Architecture

In Tejina, the Fiestas Patronales in honour of San Bartolomé take place around 24 August. Their most traditional element is the Corazones; the festival is also known as the Fiesta de los Corazones.

Culture

The Fiesta de los Corazones, which is associated with San Bartolomé, originated in the second half of the 19th century and brings together the three traditional districts of El Pico, Calle Arriba and Calle Abajo. This festival tradition combines a fixed date with the connection between several districts.

The Auto Sacramental de los Reyes Magos de Tejina is associated with a performance on 5 January at around 9:30 p.m. in the parish square of San Bartolomé de Tejina. The play is one of the oldest surviving forms of folk theatre in the Canary Islands; corresponding evidence dates back at least to 1905.

The Auto Sacramental is divided into three episodes: the first covers the angels’ announcement to the shepherds and their offerings for the infant Jesus. The second shows the Three Kings’ play, with their dialogue with Herod and the adoration of the infant Jesus; the third depicts the Flight into Egypt.

Architecture

The Iglesia de San Bartolomé de Tejina and the movable cultural assets associated with it are protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. The church has three naves separated by lowered stone arches, resting on square Tuscan pillars.

The main façade features a stone bell gable with a double round arch for the bells.

Production and Landscape

The Destilería de San Bartolomé de Tejina was founded in 1948. Today, the Destilería de San Bartolomé de Tejina comprises a large complex with a distillery and bottling plant and several halls; the facilities house machinery that was formerly used in sugar-cane production.

In the Valle de Guerra and Tejina area, alongside banana plantations, there are also papaya, avocado and wine production, as well as greenhouses for ornamental flowers. Bananas, papayas, avocados, wine and ornamental flowers represent different forms of agricultural use within the shared area of Valle de Guerra and Tejina.
