Las Cuevecitas de Candelaria – Trails, Landscape and History

In Las Cuevecitas, the Iglesia de San Andrés Apóstol houses depictions of the Virgen de la Rosa and San Andrés. One of the area’s distinctive natural features is El Pino de Cuevecitas, a Canary Island pine (Pinus canariensis). It is more than 300 years old and protected by the municipality.

Landscape

The Mirador de Chivisaya is located in the protected landscape of Paisaje Protegido de Siete Lomas. From there, panoramic views extend across the surroundings of Chivisaya, the Media Montaña volcano and the Valle de Güímar – from the coast to the summit. The higher points of Las Cuevecitas also offer views over the Valle de Güímar. These points lie almost at the Parque Natural de la Corona Forestal.

The rural character includes small family-run agricultural holdings. Many are located on terraces and cultivated areas adapted to the complex terrain, which is crossed by several ravines. Historically, Las Cuevecitas was a regular route for residents of the higher settlements in the Valle de Güímar.

Hiking

The SL-TF 296.1 Barranco El Rincón is an officially approved linear hiking trail with a low difficulty level and a length of 1.4 kilometres. The local trail leads to Araya and ends in Las Cuevecitas. It is accessible from the Iglesia de San Andrés Apóstol.

Its route begins at the Plaza de Las Cuevecitas via Calle La Hoya. At first, the trail follows a narrow, winding path towards the Barranco de El Rincón. In the final section, it passes through abandoned terraces. These bear witness to the area’s significant agricultural activity in the 20th century. Culture and History

Around 30 November, Las Cuevecitas celebrates a festival in honour of San Andrés Apóstol. The festival features various artistic events. The events of the Fiestas de Las Cuevecitas take place at the Plaza de Las Cuevecitas and in the surrounding areas; they are organised jointly by the Ayuntamiento and the Asociación de vecinos.

The now-disused Bodegas de Chivisaya are located on the Media Montaña volcano. In the 18th and 19th centuries, they were known for producing white and rosé wines. These wines were known throughout the island and were even exported to the United Kingdom.
