Agulo: Views, Trails and Culture

At the Mirador de Abrante, visitors can walk along the cliff: the seven-metre-long glass viewing platform has a transparent floor and transparent walls. The viewpoint offers views of Agulo town centre extending as far as the island of Tenerife.

Nature

The Juego de Bolas visitor centre is located in La Palmita, within the municipality of Agulo. Panels, models and other exhibition elements explain the geology, vegetation, climate, flora and fauna; the centre also provides detailed information about the natural and cultural resources of Garajonay National Park.

Playa de San Marcos has medium-coarse black sand and strong Atlantic surf and is not suitable for swimming. You can reach the beach on foot or by car via the road connecting it with Agulo town centre.

Trails

The Juego de Bolas–Abrante route is an easy, 4.5-kilometre circular trail between the visitor centre and the viewpoint; it passes through Abrante’s red soils.

The San Marcos route is an easy, 3.2-kilometre out-and-back walk. The circular trail and the out-and-back route give you two clearly distinguishable options for planning your day.

The urban route, the Juego de Bolas–Abrante circular trail and the San Marcos route therefore offer three different ways of moving through the described town and landscape areas. For planning your day, the trail lengths of 4.5 and 3.2 kilometres, as well as the circular and out-and-back formats, can be directly compared. Townscape

The town area of Agulo includes El Charco, Las Casas and La Montañeta and features examples of typical local architecture.

The urban route follows the old Camino Real through La Montañeta, Las Casas and El Charco. Along the way, it passes white houses and paved streets with three centuries of history.

Culture

El Pescante was built in 1908 and had a 56-metre-long wooden landing structure. Fruit was loaded directly into the ships’ holds via this structure.

The San Marcos festival is celebrated in Agulo every year on 25 April. During the festival, residents carry the image of the saint to the beach chapel; this custom is part of a centuries-old tradition.

The Casa del Pintor José Aguiar, also known as the Museo de los Filii Christi, houses a museum dedicated to a theosophical and Christian community that emerged in Agulo at the beginning of the 20th century. Temporary exhibitions and cultural activities take place on the upper floor.
