In Leintz-Gatzaga, the Museo de la Sal commemorates salt production, which was carried out there from the Iron Age until 1972.

The time span therefore ranges from an early period of the town’s history to the recent past; 1972 marks the documented endpoint of this salt production.

Salt History and Culture

Medieval remains were found at Aitzorrotz Castle; the findings recorded there date back as far as the 12th century.

The castle is therefore one of the places where Leintz-Gatzaga’s tangible connection to its medieval past can be understood through preserved findings.

The Baroque public Fuente de los 12 caños As de Copas was built in 1725 and, as a public fountain, has twelve outlets.

Nuestra Señora de Dorleta continues to be regarded as the universal patron saint of cyclists.

Forests and Trails

The River Deba rises in Leintz-Gatzaga, in a landscape with dense oak and beech forests. A circular trail leads to this source and reaches Hiruerreketa on its way through beech forest and other deciduous forests.

The circular trail described thus connects the source area of the Deba with Hiruerreketa and passes through several of the named forest types, including beech forest and other deciduous forests.

The GR-289 stage “Los pasos del Oso” runs from Leintz-Gatzaga to Araotz and leads from Leintz-Gatzaga into Aizkorri-Aratz Natural Park.

The GR-289 stage passes the Museo de la Sal and the Santuario de Dorleta, then climbs through the beech forests around Makatzagain.

This stage therefore explicitly includes the starting point of Leintz-Gatzaga, as well as Araotz, Aizkorri-Aratz Natural Park and Makatzagain as named points along the route.
