Discover Getaria: Culture, Txakoli and Coastal Trails

The Church of San Salvador in Getaria is the most significant Gothic building in Gipuzkoa. At the end of the 19th century, it was declared a national monument.

Culture and History

Under the parish church of San Salvador in Getaria lies Katrapona, a historic passageway. It connects Calle Mayor, known as Kale Nagusia in Basque, with the stairs leading down to the harbour. Katrapona also preserves part of the old fortifications.

In the San Prudentzio Auzoa neighbourhood stands the Ermita de San Prudencio, a medieval chapel dating from the 14th to the 15th century. The parish church of San Martín de Askizu is considered one of the most significant examples of rural Gothic architecture in Gipuzkoa and its earliest expression in the province.

The Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum houses a clothing collection featuring designs by Cristóbal Balenciaga. The designs date from 1912 to 1971. The museum opened on 7 June 2011 in Getaria, Gipuzkoa, and is dedicated exclusively to a fashion designer.

Elkano, Mundubira Espazioa presents an exhibition about Juan Sebastián Elkano, his life shaped by the sea, and his role as captain of the voyage that changed the world. Elkano’s landing is reenacted every four years during Getaria’s patron saint festivities.

Culinary Delights and Local Traditions

Getaria’s harbour is equipped both as a fishing port and as a marina. The tradition of Getariako itsas parrilla combines high-quality fish from the fishing port with a centuries-old art of grilling.

Getariako Txakolina is made from the native grape varieties Hondarrabi Zuri and Hondarrabi Beltza. Hondarrabi Zuri is the main variety used for Txakoli with the D.O. Getariako Txakolina. Visitors can tour wineries producing Getariako Txakolina, walk through the vineyards, and taste the wine.

Nature and Trails

A short hiking route on Monte San Antón leads to the summit and past the lighthouse, which is still in operation. The Atalaya de San Antón family route is 1.7 km long and has a total ascent of 93 m. Its estimated walking time is 30 minutes.

The circular PR-Gi 202: Ruta del Txakoli route connects Zumaia, Getaria and Zarautz with the inland districts and places of Urdaneta and Aizarnazabal. Getaria can be chosen as the starting point for this circular route. The route therefore extends from the three aforementioned coastal towns to the inland places and districts.

The coastal path from Zarautz to Getaria is approximately 4.5 km long. The route takes about 45 minutes without breaks.

Lurraldebus/Euskotren bus routes UK09, UK10 and UK11 connect Donostia, Zarautz, Getaria and Zumaia. The approximate service frequency is every 30 minutes.
