Loiu – San Pedro Church, Mills and Historic Sites
Culture and History
At San Pedro Church in Loiu, medieval architectural history meets an oak organ inaugurated in 2007. The church dates back to a medieval building from the 12th century and preserves Gothic elements, including two pointed-arch portals. The organ has 1,200 pipes and 21 stops; it is six metres wide, eight metres long and two metres deep. Width, length and depth represent different measurements for an organ; the number of pipes and stops identify additional technical features. At historic churches, current opening hours and local visitor regulations may determine the day's planning.
The English Cemetery contains the remains of 56 Commonwealth and Allied casualties from the Second World War, as well as seven others buried there from the First World War. The cemetery is also distinguished by its variety of trees. The remains from the former cemetery in Abandoibarra were transferred to Loiu in 1929 and form the origin of the English Cemetery. The transfer from Abandoibarra in 1929 is part of the history of the English Cemetery's establishment.
The hermitage of San Miguel de Arbildua (Lauroeta) was once the venue for the general assemblies of the Uribe Vicariate. It was also the scene of a tragic event during the band wars of Bizkaia. Palacio Larraburu dates back to the 18th century. The twin parish houses, Las Casas Curales Gemelas, were built in 1801 according to plans by Juan de Zabala and Juan Antonio Acha.
Parks and Trails
Parque del Ayuntamiento is a large, tree-filled park surrounding the town hall, with children's play equipment, a zip line and a large castle.
The Paseo vuelta a Loiu is an easy circular route with panoramic views and a natural setting. As a cycle path, it runs from the centre of Zabaloetxe to the Larrakoetxe junction. The route passes the still-operational Goirengo Errota mill site and also runs by the Aula de la Naturaleza. Two named places, Goirengo Errota and the Aula de la Naturaleza, lie along the Paseo; the mill site is still in operation.
Mills and Landscape
Among Loiu's mills highlighted for their scenic setting are Txitorreta, Errotatxu and Goiengo Errota.
Cuisine and Crafts
Loiu's gastronomy and crafts fair takes place on the third Sunday in October. Gastronomic products and crafts are offered at numerous stalls throughout the town.
Sidrería asador Loiu offers various menus, including a typical cider-house menu and a tasting menu.
For events with a fixed date, checking the date and time is part of standard travel preparation. For circular routes, it is advisable to check current information on trail conditions and transport connections before travelling. At historic sites, opening hours and local visitor regulations may determine the day's planning. For parks with play equipment, checking current information on permitted usage times before visiting is a sensible precaution.
