Culture and History
Moreda has numerous historic buildings with coats of arms, portals with round arches, and galleries with glazed or open sun galleries. These different architectural elements shape the historic townscape and make several forms of traditional design visible on the buildings.
The Portada del Creador at the Iglesia de Santa María de Moreda is a stone portal from the mid-16th century in the Plateresque style.
The portal is decorated with pagan and Christian mythological figures as well as grotesque motifs typical of the Renaissance. As a result, the Portada del Creador combines religious imagery and Renaissance ornamentation in a single architectural element. Here, the connection between architecture and figurative decoration is concentrated at the entrance to the church. The stone construction, the dating to the mid-16th century, and the Plateresque vocabulary of forms thus come together in a specific building at this same portal.
The gilding of the Retablo Mayor and the polychromy of its saints were carried out in 1759 using 55,000 sheets of gold leaf. The date and the large number of gold-leaf sheets give this work of decoration a clearly defined historical framework. The decoration includes both the gilding of the Retablo Mayor and the colourful treatment of the figures of the saints.
The Quema de los Judas takes place annually in Moreda on Easter Sunday.
In the Quema de los Judas, two figures, Judas and Judesa, personify evil. The tradition is therefore tied to Easter Sunday in terms of timing and characterised by the two named figures. Its name thus directly refers to the two figures who are at the centre of this annually observed tradition.
Cuisine
Olive oil production in Moreda dates back to very ancient times. This long historical timeframe is just as much a part of the town’s history as the surviving parts of the mill tradition today.
The building of the “La Equidad” cooperative mill preserves the old oil mill with its complete machinery and a new mill where the olives are currently processed. The building thus combines the old oil mill with its complete technical equipment and the new facility where current processing takes place.
