Discover Artziniega: Culture and Hiking Trails

The current construction of the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Encina was completed in 1498. The Santuario contains a Gothic high altar in the Hispano-Flemish style. The construction period and furnishings point to two different aspects of the same cultural site: the creation of the present-day building and the art-historical design of its most important altar. This is where an exploration of Artziniega begins: at a place where a specific conclusion to the building’s history is combined with a clearly named stylistic feature.

Culture

The Torre de la calle Correo dates from the second half of the 15th century. The Fragua de Pablo Respaldiza demonstrates how iron was worked by hand. The Museo Etnográfico de Artziniega displays a significant collection of tools and instruments used in the region’s traditional crafts. At the Taller-Museo Santxotena, the artist’s works are presented in direct contact with the sculptor.

The cultural offering thus ranges from a historic tower and the practical working of iron to a collection of tools and instruments.
