Son Bou combines a 2,400 m-long beach with an extensive dune system and the important Son Bou wetland. Both landscapes behind the beach are protected as an Área Natural de Especial Interés. The water at the beach is shallow and crystal clear, with light-coloured seabeds below. From the car park, the beach can be reached by crossing the dunes. Long walks along the shore are possible there all year round.

Nature
The Prat de Son Bou is a coastal wetland covering around 80 hectares and one of Menorca’s largest wetlands. Hundreds of waterbirds pass through the Prat de Son Bou throughout the year; many of them breed in the dense vegetation in spring and summer. The wetland thus forms a distinct natural area behind the beach, where year-round bird activity and the seasonal breeding period provide different observation focuses.
Trails
On the Camí de Cavalls nature trail, the Sant Tomàs–Son Bou stage is 6.5 kilometres long. A cycle route runs from Sant Tomàs to the Prat de Son Bou over six kilometres; it is very easy, almost flat and runs mainly along the coast. For planning the day, the two routes can be considered separately according to their length, mode of transport and terrain. This places a nature trail and a cycle route with their own rhythm side by side, rather than presenting the same coastal landscape from just one perspective.
History
The early Christian basilica of Son Bou is one of Menorca’s most significant late antique archaeological sites. Experts date its construction to the end of the 5th century AD; it remained in use until the 6th or 7th century AD. The archaeological site can be visited today. The complex includes some very simple burials. The basilica thus combines a visitable site with a clearly defined late antique period and a preserved component of the complex.
