Nature

The Barranco de Cala en Porter is twelve kilometres long, making it Menorca's longest gorge after the Barranco de Algendar. Its valley floor is characterised mainly by cultivated areas, kitchen gardens and fruit trees. At Cala en Porter beach, fine white sand meets shallow, clear water. The beach is approximately 150 metres long and 200 metres wide. Behind it, the Torrente de Cala en Porter forms a small wetland visited by numerous birds.

Hiking and cycling

Municipal Route 6, “Torre d'en Galmés – Cala en Porter”, is 6.2 kilometres long and has a moderate level of difficulty. It begins at the interpretation centre of the Talayotic settlement of Torre d'en Galmés and ends at Cala en Porter beach. A large part of its route lies within the Natura 2000 network, including the Special Area of Conservation and Special Protection Area for birds ES0000237 Des Canutells a Llucalari.

Stage 16 of the Camí de Cavalls also leads into the area: it ends on the edge of the Cala en Porter development near the beach car park, while the beach is 250 metres from the endpoint. This stage includes a detour to the Talayotic settlement of Torre d'en Galmés, with an interpretation centre, signposted trails and information boards.

Municipal Route 7, “BARRANC DE S'ALBLAGAI – CALA EN PORTER – TORRE D’EN GALMÉS”, is designed for cycling and Nordic walking. The circular route is 16.8 kilometres long and has a moderate level of difficulty. The estimated duration is approximately 65 minutes by bicycle and 180 minutes for Nordic walking. Some sections lie within the Special Area of Conservation and Special Protection Area for birds ES0000237 Des Canutells a Llucalari and the ANEI Me-11 De Biniparratx a Llucalari.

Coast and water

The beach has a buoyed area for water sports such as stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking. On the “Route of the Caves”, kayakers can disembark at rocky projections at the foot of the cliff to sunbathe or snorkel in the clear water. In summer, the beach has a lifeguard service and a low-barrier walkway for people with disabilities.

The cliffs are home to the sea cave Cova d'en Xoroi, which houses a club with panoramic views. West of the beach stands the Talaia de ses Penyes, a defensive tower on a 68-metre-high cliff.

Culture and events

According to local legend, Xoroi, a man of unknown origin, arrived by sea and sought refuge in the Cova d'en Xoroi. Today, the Cova d'en Xoroi offers daytime events, sunset events with live music and nighttime events.

The fiestas of Cala en Porter take place every year on the third weekend of September. They include a Jaleo event on Cala en Porter beach, the Qualcada horseback ride and the handing over of the flag to the Caixer fadrí. Another recurring event is the Sant Llorenç beach volleyball tournament: it was held at Cala en Porter beach as its 30th edition in 2024 and its 31st edition in 2025. It was organised by Club Voleibol Alaior and the Ajuntament d’Alaior.
