Villayón – Pico, Oneta Waterfalls and Regional Culture

In Villayón, Pico de Villayón is located in the municipal capital. The mountain is 521 metres high, and panoramic views from its summit extend as far as the Cantabrian Sea. The Ruta del Pico Villayón can be accessed on foot from the town centre.

Nature

The Cascadas de Oneta Natural Monument comprises three waterfalls arranged in succession over a short distance. The permanent waterfalls lie amid lush vegetation along a section where the River Oneta approaches the village of Oneta. The first waterfall is called La Firbia and has a drop of around 15 metres.

The route to the Oneta waterfalls can be walked year-round and has an estimated maximum duration of three hours. It passes the hermitage of Santa María de Oneta and the remains of the old Abajo mill. This mill once used water power to grind grain.

Culture

The Centro de Interpretación de los Paisajes Protegidos de Montaña has one of its two locations in Villayón. It focuses on the importance of the Paisaje Protegido de las Sierras de Carondio y Valledor, as well as on the cultural, archaeological, ethnographic and natural elements and resources in the area surrounding the protected landscape.

A traditional sport in Villayón is called Bolo Celta.

The Feria de Todos los Santos takes place in Villayón on 31 October and includes livestock, handicrafts, and agricultural and food-related products.

The Feria de San Martín takes place in Villayón on 11 November and focuses on pigs.
