The Vallemoro PR-AS-214 route begins at the Collada de Taranes and is a moderately difficult 10-kilometre out-and-back hike. It leads from the upper part of Taranes to the Collada de Taranes, offers views of the nature park and the western massif of the Picos de Europa, and continues into the beech forest known as La Faeda. The route then continues to the Collada de Llués, where panoramic views open up towards Piloña. The route from Taranes to Tiatordos is 16 kilometres long and takes seven hours.

Foz de la Escalada and views of Tiatordos

The Mirador de Taranes viewpoint lies at the foot of Peñas Taranes and Sobancio, the Tiatordos massif and the impressive Foz de la Escalada gorge. The Foz de la Escalada can be seen from Taranes and marks the beginning of the classic route to the summit of Tiatordos. At the gorge, the old path over the pass leads to a stone bridge over the river.

Directions to the viewpoint and Vallemoro

To reach the Mirador de Taranes, take the AS-261 towards San Juan de Beleño. At Mestas, after approximately 10 kilometres, turn right onto the PO-4 towards Taranes. The Vallemoro PR-AS-214 route can be accessed via the church after passing through Taranes; the vehicle can be parked at the church.

Architecture and history in the village

El Castiello de Taranes is a protohistoric archaeological site. The Barrio de la Barraca is one of the representative architectural ensembles in Taranes. Taranes has notable examples of Indian architecture from the contemporary period. Casa Plazuela del Sol is a 19th-century building with a carved wooden corridor and a type of dwelling characteristic of the area. Santa María de Taranes is considered a church with a Latin-cross floor plan, a wide transept and a barrel vault featuring frescoes of the four Evangelists. An inscription in the sacristy commemorates the construction of the building in 1779.

A regional speciality: Los Beyos

In the villages of Ponga, Los Beyos cheese is made and matured using goat’s, sheep’s or cow’s milk. It adds a specific culinary connection to the region to your hiking and cultural experiences.
