Sellaño between river landscapes, hiking trails and culture

The PR AS-212 Sellañu–Semeldón hiking trail begins in Sellañu, is of moderate difficulty and is 4.4 kilometres each way. From the outset, the route combines woodland, water and distinctive landscape features to create a varied trail.

Nature and trails

The PR AS-212 initially heads west through a wooded area. A meadow and the river lie to the left before the trail crosses a small stream at the Puente de Pumazaneu concrete bridge. It continues to Collado de Semeldón, where there is a hut; the end of the route, with a viewpoint over the deeply cut valley of the Semeldón River, lies to the right.

The Ponga River rises at Puerto de Ventaniella and flows through Sobrefoz, Abiegos and Cadenaba to Sellaño. Within the Ponga Biosphere Reserve, the Ponga River stands at an elevation of 213 metres at Sellaño.

On the right bank of the Samedón River, also known as Valle Moro, there is a recreational area in Sellaño with swings for children. The different trail lengths and surfaces help you compare hiking and cycling as two clearly distinct ways of planning your day.

Cycling routes in the surrounding region

In the wider region around Sellaño, the 54-kilometre, very difficult, circular gravel day tour Sellañu–Beleño–Bedules leads to Les Bedules and starts and ends in Sellañu. From Sellaño, it runs approximately eight kilometres upstream, parallel to the Ponga River. A paved track leads to Les Bedules, followed by a dirt and gravel track through dense beech forest to Collada Granceno. From Les Bedules, a route leads to the Peloño Forest, one of Asturias's most emblematic forests.

History and culture

The Iglesia de las Nieves in Sellaño dates from the 18th century and is a worthwhile place to visit. Two gravestones from the period of Roman colonisation were also found in Sellaño.

A former timber railway used to transport wood had two stations: one in Sellañu and another near Majada de Semeldón. Its ruins are still visible today and form part of the historic traces connected with the hiking trails.

Festivals and dates

During the Aguinaldo in Sellaño, people celebrate on horseback during Carnival. Riders travel through Cazo, Ambingue, Los Laderos, Tribierto, Cortes, Priesca and Sellaño on decorated horses; in Sellaño, they begin and end their route. Casadielles, rosquillas, frisuelos and other typical sweet treats are distributed during the Aguinaldo.

The Las Nieves festival takes place in Sellaño on 6 August. On 8 December, Sellaño hosts a livestock fair.
