Trails and Elevations

Castañedo del Monte combines the Camino Natural with a history of iron mining. Stage 16 Villanueva–Villamayor reaches the village after crossing the Trubia via a steep ascent. On this section, the river crossing, significant elevation gain and arrival in the village are therefore closely connected.

The section of Stage 16 of the Camino Natural to Castañedo del Monte runs mostly along the same route as the GR-101.1. From Castañedo del Monte, the stage continues uphill along the road to the rural village of Linares. When planning the route, this makes it possible to distinguish between the shared course with the GR-101.1, the ascent after the Trubia and the subsequent road section.

The two types of route therefore differ clearly in their spatial logic: the stage connects several villages and continues beyond Castañedo del Monte, while the route via Minas and Pico Plantón returns to the same starting point. This comparison makes the course of the described routes immediately understandable.

Culture and Mining History

The Minas de la Parva can be visited regularly and free of charge as part of the municipal cultural heritage programme through La Ponte-Ecomuséu; advance booking is required. The visit therefore includes both the opening arrangements and the reservation, as well as the historical context provided on site.

The Minas de la Parva in Castañedo del Monte are among the oldest industrial iron-mining complexes in Asturias; they began operating in 1794 to supply the Trubia arms factory. At the Minas de la Parva, mine entrances, galleries, extraction sites and open-pit workings have survived as remnants of ore extraction. The site thus combines a specific year marking the beginning of its use with several visible forms of earlier mining activity.

Tradition and Religious Architecture

In Castañedo del Monte, San Juan is celebrated on 24 June. This fixed-date tradition forms a distinct cultural point of reference alongside the permanently visible architectural and industrial heritage.

The Iglesia de San Gabriel Arcángel is a religious heritage site in Castañedo del Monte. It dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. Its design is predominantly Baroque; the floor plan has a single nave. The church therefore allows its period, religious function, Baroque design language and single-nave layout to be considered as distinct features.

Nature

One route leads from Castañedo del Monte via the Minas and Pico Plantón back to Castañedo del Monte. Unlike the linear stages of the Camino Natural, it describes a return to the starting point while combining mining history with the named peak.

The route offers good views of the surrounding area, particularly of Oviedo. For planning your day, this places two different types of route side by side: the linear connection via Villanueva and Villamayor, continuing on to Linares, and the route that returns to Castañedo del Monte after passing through the Minas and over Pico Plantón.
