Argul: Rock Architecture, Culture and Routes along the Agüeira

Argul lies on a slope on the left bank of the Agüeira River. Its stone buildings rest on the natural rock and are connected by galleries, tunnels and elevated corridors that serve movement between the buildings.

Culture and History

The historic ensemble of Argul was protected in 2004 as a Bien de Interés Cultural, an asset of cultural interest. The farmsteads of Argul were arranged around courtyards, where dovecotes and hórreos stood, built entirely from local slate, wood and clay.

Casa de Vilar has an almost 20-metre-long tunnel. A veiril, meaning an above-ground passage, was built between the cuarto novo and the main building of the historic ensemble of Argul. The Chapel of San Antonio was built on the rock and has a Baroque altarpiece adapted to the limited interior space.

Argul is also home to the Casa de Juan Alonso Villabrille y Ron. Juan Alonso Villabrille y Ron was a sculptor at the court of Philip V. The combination of courtyards, passageways, tunnel construction and religious architecture is among the specifically identified features of the site.

Nature and Routes

The Ruta del Río Agüeira is an 8.12-kilometre, moderately difficult circular route in the mountains; its estimated duration is 3 to 5 hours. Known as the Ruta del Río Agüeira (PR-AS 117), it follows the Agüeira River through chestnut and pine forests and passes through Argul. In parts, it runs through the Cuenca del Agüeira Special Area of Conservation of the Natura 2000 network.

The Pesoz–Argul–Bousoño cycling route through western Asturias visits Argul as well as the Castro de San Isidro on the boundary between the municipalities of Pesoz and San Martín de Oscos. Hiking and cycling therefore stand alongside each other as different forms of activity.

Getting There and Visiting

The road to Argul from Navia follows the AS-12 towards Pesoz. At kilometre marker 58, turn right onto a signposted track. Before entering private property in Argul, visitors should ask for permission.
