Muros de Nalón between coast, harbour and history

Coast, views and water

In Muros de Nalón, the Senda de los Miradores connects the former coal port of San Esteban with Playa de Aguilar. Via viewpoints such as the Mirador del Espíritu Santo, it leads through the coastal landscape of Muros de Nalón. In 2023, the Senda de los Miradores was awarded the Blue Flag by ADEAC in the Senderos Azules category.

The Senda Norte offers a different kind of route. The approximately 1 km long, asphalted and almost level path begins at the FEVE station in San Esteban, passes restored coal-loading facilities and the Tolvas, and offers several picnic tables along the way. Its approximate length of 1 km, asphalt surface and almost level course provide concrete reference points for planning your own day.

At Playa de Aguilar, recreational boats may anchor, and diving and surfing are possible. The Nalón River flows into the Cantabrian coast between San Esteban and L'Arena, forming the Ría de Pravia there.

San Esteban: harbour and industrial history

San Esteban in Muros de Nalón was Spain's first and only coal port. Restored cranes and coal-loading facilities preserve its industrial history there.

The Museo Puerto Carbonero in San Esteban includes the old coal-loading facilities, the Casa del Vigía, the lighthouse of San Esteban, the harbour cove, the outer harbour, the route of the coal railway and the Mirador de las Tolvas.

San Esteban combines maritime, industrial and mining heritage with a saltwater pool and the Chapel of the Holy Spirit. Tradition associates the patronal dedication of the Capilla del Espíritu Santo with the 15th century.

Culture and history

The Palacio de Valdecarzana y Vallehermoso is a privately owned building complex from the 15th century that can only be viewed from the outside. It consists of a square tower, an enclosing wall and a preserved portal in the Plateresque style.

During the Spanish War of Independence, the Palacio de Valdecarzana y Vallehermoso served as the headquarters of the French Marshal Ney.

In Muros de Nalón, information panels installed at several strategically located sites connect film plots and characters with scenes filmed there, the history of the filming and the involvement of many people from Muros de Nalón.

For a holiday apartment in Muros de Nalón, you can compare your travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions as personal criteria. Regional cuisine

In the area around Muros del Nalón and Soto del Barco, angulas, traditionally caught young eels, hold an outstanding place in the cuisine. In San Juan de la Arena, they are caught using traditional methods; their consumption is the occasion for gastronomic events.
