Culture

Sama’s industrial history includes the Bocamina of Pozo Modesta in Sama; it is listed in the Asturian inventory of industrial heritage with comprehensive protection status. Pozo Fondón was one of the first vertical shafts to replace the mountain mines at the beginning of the 20th century.

The Puente nuevo de Sama is a 63-metre-long iron bridge. It replaced a wooden bridge used to transport coal and was the only connection between Sama and La Felguera until the 1960s.

The Iglesia de Santiago de Sama is a large Neo-Gothic church that was rebuilt after the end of the Spanish Civil War, following the destruction of its predecessor, a 19th-century building, during the October Revolution of 1934. The bell tower on the right-hand side contains engravings from 1630 originating from the Ermita del Carbayu.

The Cine Felgueroso was renovated and reopened in 2007 and currently serves as an audiovisual centre. The distinctive elliptical building was designed by the architect Juan José Suárez and is one of the few examples of a German architectural movement from the 1950s.

The Casa sindical en Sama de Langreo was built in 1950; it is a work by the Hermanos Somolinos and belongs to the architectural Modernism movement. The Viviendas para ferroviarios del Ferrocarril de Langreo en Sama were built in the 1950s on behalf of the Ferrocarril de Langreo, with the participation of Carlos Roa. Their architectural details include pinnacles and Ionic capitals, among others.

The Estación de FEVE de Sama de Langreo dates from 1907 and is located within the parish of La Felguera. Its traditional and elaborate design features walls made of hewn natural-stone blocks.

Routes

In the centre of Sama lies Parque Dorado, which was laid out from 1902 onwards. It has a mini-golf course, a sports field, table-tennis tables, and padel courts.

The Paseo Fluvial junto al río Nalón runs between Sama and Ciaño and ends next to the MUMI mining museum in the neighbouring municipality of San Martín del Rey Aurelio. The route is completely flat and four kilometres long.
