Cudillero between cliffs, harbor and coastal paths

Cudillero is a small, picturesque fishing harbor on a mountainside in an abrupt horseshoe shape formed by cliffs. The houses seem to hang above the harbor with their colorful eaves and windows.

Culture

The town of Cudillero is classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category Conjunto Histórico under the Cudillero municipality. The parish church of San Pedro is a late Gothic building from the 16th century with interesting Baroque carvings inside. It was financed by the Gremio de Mareantes, the fishermen’s guild.

The Gothic chapel of El Humilladero, dating from the 13th century, is considered the oldest building in the town; prisoners were put on display there before their execution. El Anfiteatro is considered the residential area of the Pixuetos, the fishermen of Cudillero. L’Amuravela has developed into a chronicle of events in the town and the lives of its residents, written in verse.

Nature and coast

From the La Garita viewpoint, you can see the lighthouse, harbor and town of Cudillero. Playa del Silencio, or Gavieiro, in Castañeras near Cudillero is a cove protected by cliffs and islets of various sizes; it can be reached via a roughly 500-meter footpath with numerous steps.

The Faro de Cabo Vidio stands near Cudillero on cliffs that are almost 100 meters high. The fish taverns on a narrow, paved square by the sea are considered Cudillero’s main tourist attraction.

Routes and discoveries

The approximately 24-kilometer-long main route, Ruta de las Brañas Vaqueiras, is a circular trail near Cudillero. The path to Cascada del Gorgollón follows the Sangreña River to a waterfall and a small natural pool.

The Lamuño-Oleiros-Concha de Artedo route begins and ends in Lamuño near Cudillero. The Ruta Entrecabos runs near Cudillero between the Faro de Cabo Vidio and Playa del Silencio.

The Ruta de Faros offers panoramic views of Cudillero harbor and the Asturian coast; Cudillero also has a route linking its viewpoints. The various starting points and landscape settings allow you to compare the routes according to your preferred focus.

La Iglesiona near Cudillero at Cabo Vidio is a cave formed by wave erosion that can be visited at low tide. For the descent to La Iglesiona near Cudillero, it is recommended not to go down alone, but to join a guided tour.
