Nature

Playa del Silencio is a 500 m long pebble beach with scattered development. It is suitable for swimming, relaxing and photography. From Castañeras near Novellana, it can be reached via the turn-off to Novellana; there is a car park for five cars, followed by an approximately 25-minute approach along a path, footpath and stairs.

La Barquera is one of Novellana’s three beaches and is a 250 m long and 20 m wide pebble beach with low visitor numbers and scattered development. It can be reached via Cala del Riego; access on foot is difficult. In front of La Barquera lies the large rocky islet of Islote Percebera; the area is rich in marine resources. Cala del Riego can be reached on foot from Novellana and from Cala del Silencio; when the tide is not too high, there is a connection to Cala la Barquiera.

Cala Salencia is a 150 m long cove consisting mainly of pebbles. Its access route begins at the eastern edge of Novellana; the downhill footpath takes an estimated 15 minutes and runs along a wide, paved path.

Things to do

The Entrecabos Route is a 10.2 km long, easy coastal traverse for hikers, with an estimated duration of 3 to 5 hours and a year-round hiking season. The different details regarding length, duration and hiking period help compare the routes according to the desired amount of walking for the day.

The route climbs up to Novellana and passes through L’Airín; from there, Peña del Fornón can be seen. The Entrecabos Route ends at Playa del Silencio and provides a connection to further coastal routes on the western Asturian coast.

Culture

The Iglesia de Santiago preserves significant woodcarvings, particularly the representation known as “Cristo de los Vaqueiros”. The church was built in the 18th century over an earlier hermitage and is designed in the Neoclassical style; its nave has a very simple vault.

Novellana’s station building is protected as a “Bien de Interés Cultural” and forms part of the ensemble of railway stations designed in 1950 by the engineer Francisco González Quijano for the Ferrol–Gijón railway line. The station building was adapted for use as higher-class tourist accommodation under the name Andén de Novellana.
