Trails and History

The Camín de Careses (PR AS-216) starts in Careses and is a 15.1-kilometre circular route with a duration of three hours and 45 minutes. Almost its entire length can be covered on foot or by bicycle. The La Viona Greenway uses part of the route of the San Martín del Rey Aurelio–Lieres–Gijón–El Musel railway line, begun around 1906 by the company “Ferrocarriles de San Martin-Lieres-Gijon-El Musel” and nearly completed, but never put into operation.

The former San Martín del Rey Aurelio–Gijón railway route currently exists as a connecting path between La Collada and Careses.

The ascent to Peña Careses offers panoramic views from the Cantabrian Mountains to the Cantabrian Sea. Climbing at Peña Careses is prohibited during the breeding season of the birds living there, from 15 February to 31 July.

The La Viona Tunnel is home to bat colonies, including species listed as protected. The protection plan for Peña Careses is intended to protect the area’s natural resources and enable their use for recreation and leisure.

Near Careses lies the Cueva de San Pedrín, an approximately 80-metre-long cave through which the Rufiañu River flows and which is notable for its geological value. Among the natural features, views, wildlife, conservation planning and geology each play different roles.

Culture

The Lavadero de Careses is one of the area’s listed ethnographic cultural assets. Near Careses, the San Pedrín Festival, recognised as an event of tourist interest, takes place every year on the third Sunday in August, featuring a folkloric procession and an Asturian Mass sung by the Coro Santiaguín.
