Campiello in Asturias: Culture, Nature and Trails

The Río Valdesantibáñez flows through Campiello before reaching Entrago. In the village stands the Casa de los Quiñones-Valcarce, whose construction phases date from the 15th and 16th centuries; later alterations were added in the 18th and 20th centuries. Its west-facing main façade from the 16th century preserves rose windows, geometric decorative motifs and a wooden coat of arms of the Quiñones family.

Culture

The Casa includes a residence, outbuildings and open spaces with a corrada, garden and vegetable garden. The L-shaped building has one or two storeys, depending on the slope. The Capilla de San Miguel has a rectangular floor plan, an open porch at the front with wooden columns resting on a low wall, and a bell gable with two openings. The Iglesia de San Miguel is Romanesque in style and has an arrow slit, plain corbels and a barrel vault.

Older traces are also present: medieval pottery finds at Trillacueva provide evidence of the existence of brañas in the early Middle Ages. The livestock from Campiello traditionally grazes in summer at the Braña de Cueiro.

Nature

Balcón Real is located beside the Senda del Oso in Las Ubiñas-La Mesa Nature Park and the Biosphere Reserve. Balcón Real comprises five rural accommodation units, including three apartments and two studios. The nature park combines glacially formed rock walls, lush forests, mountain pastures, river valleys and villages with ethnographic heritage.

In the immediate surroundings, the Cascada del Xiblu plunges in three cascades over a total height of just under 100 metres. Also nearby, Cueva Huerta forms a distinctive karst system with a gorge, sinkhole, various valley passages and resurgence, comprising more than 20 kilometres of horizontal galleries. A guided family tour takes visitors about 300 metres through the cave along wooden walkways and stairs. Nearby, the route in the Hayedo de Montegrande includes an approximately 350-metre-long accessible walkway from the car park.

Trails and Discoveries

The Ruta de la Braña de Vicenturo (PR. AS-233) runs through a landscape of great ethnographic and scenic value. Its route passes through Urria, Taja, Cueiro and Vicenturo before returning to Urria. At the Parque de la Prehistoria de Teverga, an exhibition presents facsimile reproductions of important European art ensembles as well as portable art from the Upper Palaeolithic. The park also includes an animal enclosure with Przewalski's horses, European bison, Heck cattle, red deer and fallow deer.
