Bañugues – Beach, Coastal Trails and Holiday Apartments

Playa de Bañugues is a quiet beach in a rural setting with golden sand. Its bay has very little swell and forms natural pools at low tide. The beach is suitable for swimming and recreational fishing and is part of the protected Cabo Peñas landscape. Coastal Trails and Landscape

The coastal trail from Luanco to Verdicio reaches Bañugues and continues towards the old Llumeres mine. In the section near Llumeres, the coastal trail has a viewpoint overlooking the old ore-loading harbour and the industrial surroundings. The “Bañugues a Ferrero” route starts at the Área recreativa de Bañugues picnic area near the beach of the same name and leads onto the pavement of the GO-1 road. It passes through small settlements, livestock farms and meadows in the parish of Bañugues before reaching El Monte, and also leads to a small picnic area at the foot of a lighthouse. The two coastal routes have different focuses: the trail from Luanco to Verdicio connects Bañugues with Llumeres, while the route to Ferrero runs through settlements and meadows to El Monte and continues to a lighthouse.

Festivals and Local Cuisine

The Sacramental de Bañugues is an Asturian romería featuring children’s activities, a parade of floats, a dance event and fireworks. El Carmen in Bañugues includes a solemn mass and a procession; El Carmen de Bañugues takes place in Bañugues on the last weekend of September, on Saturday and Sunday. San Nicolás in Bañugues is celebrated on 6 December with a solemn mass and a procession. The Festival del Oricio takes place on a variable date and includes tastings and traditional cuisine centred around oricio.

History and Archaeology

The Llumeres mines in the parish of San Nicolás de Bañugues were Asturias’s most important iron-ore mining operation in the 19th and 20th centuries. The historic Llumeres mining complex still includes the former warehouse, the washing and office building, the engine house, the ore-classification building, the mine entrance area, the loading harbour and the bakery. A local visitor route through Cabo Peñas leads to Bañugues and the 18th-century Casa-Capilla de los González Llanos. A Roman-era villa has also been identified in Bañugues. The Traslaiglesia archaeological site is among the most recent discoveries at Bañugues beach.
