Avín: Caves, Culture and Beaches Nearby

Nature and Traces of Time

The Cuevona de Avín is a large natural cave crossed inside by a small stream. It was used during the Palaeolithic; later, in the 18th and 19th centuries, it served as a post station. For planning your trip, the cave can be considered a separate nature and history topic.

No guided tour of the Cueva de La Peruyal is scheduled for 2026. The tour starts at the Avín campsite; during the tour, visitors were able to see the complete skeleton of a young steppe rhinoceros (Stephanorhinus hemitoechus). This information therefore provides another focus on natural history, clearly distinct in time from the cave’s use during the Palaeolithic and in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Culture

The Capilla de San José stands in the upper part of Avín. Its façade features a bell gable and a small sundial. Opposite the chapel is the former Casa Rectoral, now used as a residence and a typical building of eastern Asturias. The remains of the Puente Campu belong to a single-arch bridge made of dressed limestone that crossed a stream now filled in.

For planning purposes, the chapel, rectory house and bridge remains can be treated as separate local features. They represent different focal points: a religious building, a residence and a historic bridge.

Cultural Destinations

The Museo de Covadonga, a museum, is located near Avín. The Santuario de Covadonga, a church, is also located nearby. In the wider regional area are the Centro de Arte Rupestre de Tito Bustillo, a museum, and the Aula de la Miel de los Picos de Europa, also a museum. For cultural days, you can distinguish between destinations in the surrounding area and those in the wider regional area.

If you do not want to plan culture as a single theme, you can consider buildings, museums and churches separately and combine them with nature or landscape destinations. The spatial information provides two clearly distinct levels for this purpose.

Landscape

There are four beaches near Avín: Playa de Cuevas del Mar, Playa de Gulpiyuri, Playa de San Antolín and Playa de San Antonio del Mar. A viewpoint before the entrance to Cueva Oscura offers panoramic views of Onís. Beach destinations and the viewpoint can be considered different landscape themes for your planning.

If you have several interests, you can weigh nature, history, architectural heritage, museums, churches, beaches and panoramic views separately. You can arrange these priorities according to your own travel plans.

These topics can be combined with your own travel plans, for example with an interest in cave history, local culture, museums, churches or beaches in the surrounding area.

Other local destinations: Onís, Gamonedo De Cangas, Bobia.
