Candanchú can be explored from several perspectives. The highest ski area of Candanchú is located at Tuca Blanca, at an altitude of 2,400 metres. Its location at the foot of Pico Aspe, the large rocky mountains surrounding it and its north-western orientation give this winter sports area a clearly recognisable landscape profile.

Winter Sports

Pista Grande is one of Candanchú’s ski areas and is particularly popular with skiers who learn to ski there. The Candanchú ski resort also has three cross-country ski trails. The toboggan run in Candanchú is suitable for everyone. Alpine skiing, cross-country skiing and tobogganing stand alongside one another as different forms of activity and offer various ways to experience a stay in the village.

On the GR-11 route to Candanchú, the first ski lifts of the Candanchú ski resort are reached at Tuca Blanca pass.

Hiking

The first stage of the Aragonese Way of St. James leads from Candanchú to Jaca and is designated as GR 65.3. In addition, the third stage of the GR 11 leads from the Refugio de Lizara mountain refuge to Candanchú.

The fourth stage of the GR 11 leads from Candanchú via Canal Roya and Formigal to Sallent de Gállego; along the way, it reaches the Ibones de Anayet lakes.

History

The medieval castle of Candanchú lies 1 km south of Candanchú on the former route to France. It was built in the 13th century for defensive purposes and to collect customs duties. Its location on the former route and its function at the time are therefore among the historical information that places the village in context beyond winter sports.

The Hospital of Santa Cristina included a Romanesque church, of which the floor plan and crypt have been preserved. The Hospital of Santa Cristina was founded at the end of the 11th century to accommodate pilgrims and ease the hardships of their journey. The castle and the hospital point to different historical contexts: while the castle was associated with defence and customs duties, the hospital was connected with accommodating pilgrims.

The travel interests mentioned for Candanchú can be clearly distinguished. Winter sports combine several activities in the snow, the trails are organised into designated stages, and the castle and hospital represent historical evidence. These three approaches give planning different focal points and keep nature, activity and history separate as independent themes.

The different aspects of Candanchú can be considered independently of one another: the landscape shapes the ski area, the stages structure the trails, and the historic buildings tell of the site’s former functions. Visitors can therefore choose between sporting activity, the trail sections mentioned and cultural pursuits, without this implying any fixed order.

Getting There

A scheduled bus runs from Jaca to the Candanchú ski station and stops in various villages in the Valle del Aragón.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Candanchú, travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions can help structure the selection. These accommodation details stand alongside the trails, winter sports options and historical evidence described above and help keep the practical planning of the stay separate from its areas of interest.
