Cañada De Rabadán is a place where rural paths, religious customs and visible traces of history come together closely. A particularly distinctive connection is offered by the second route of the Rutas de los Molinos: it links mills between Cañada del Rabadán, El Villar, La Ventilla and Fuente Palmera and is approximately 17 km long. Along the way, the route passes through a landscape where agricultural use, old buildings and nature stand closely side by side.

Nature and paths

On the second route of the Rutas de los Molinos, a rugged rural landscape can be encountered despite the low level of difficulty. Dry farming and irrigated crops alternate with continuous olive groves and old farm cottages. The Molino El Puntal is located on the section of the route that passes through Cañada del Rabadán; its mill beam and millstones are still preserved there.

Los Arroyones, a natural area with holm oak and pine groves through which the Arroyo de Los Picachos flows, is located nearby. Los Arroyones also has outdoor cooking facilities, drinking water and various amenities for visitors. Within Cañada del Rabadán, Avenida de Andalucía crosses the settlement from one end to the other and continues towards El Villar and Écija. Parque de la Constitución is located on this avenue, a few metres from the Capilla de Santiago Apóstol. From Fuente Palmera, Cañada del Rabadán can be reached via the CP-246 road, 6 km away.

Culture and history

The settlement of Cañada del Rabadán developed along a livestock trail. At the beginning of the 19th century, it emerged in connection with the enlightened colonisation process initiated by Carlos III.

The Capilla de Santiago Apóstol houses a green-and-gold Baroque altarpiece from the Capilla de San Zoilo de Córdoba, dating from the beginning of the 18th century. The chapel's façade also bears an old wrought-iron cross from the Seminario Santa María de los Ángeles. The main altar is made of light-coloured limestone taken from a former cortijo owned by the Marqueses de Santaella.

Customs and festivals

There is a special connection between Cañada del Rabadán and the Los Arroyones area. In 2003, the idea arose of founding a brotherhood of the Romeros of Cañada del Rabadán affiliated with the Brotherhood of San Isidro de El Villar, and walking to the Los Arroyones area. The first journey by the Romeros to the Los Arroyones area took place in May 2003, with 32 families and a total of 70 Romeros. Los Arroyones is the location of El Villar's annual Romería de San Isidro.

Devotion to Saint Santiago Apóstol also shapes local customs: the image of Saint Santiago Apóstol is carried in a procession at night. As another scheduled event, the Feria of Cañada del Rabadán in 2022 was set to take place from 22 to 25 July.
