Discover Benagalbón: Folk Art, Hiking Trail and Traditions

Benagalbón can be explored through specific places, routes and events. A central cultural venue is the Museo de Artes Populares, located directly in Benagalbón. It was founded in 1995 on the initiative of local citizens to preserve local roots and cultural traditions.

Culture

The museum includes an area dedicated to a traditional farmhouse and another featuring agricultural equipment and work utensils typical of the area. Most of the objects were donated by people from the community. As a result, the focus is not only on the exhibits but also on their connection to the local population.

A historic landmark is the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria. It was built in the 16th century and is the oldest temple in the municipality. Its features include murals by Francisco Hernández Díaz depicting the Annunciation, the Purification of Mary and the Assumption.

The Centro de Estudios del Folclore Malagueño is another institution associated with the area. It is dedicated to preserving and communicating the musical traditions of Málaga province, particularly Verdiales singing. At the Certamen de Pintura Joven al Aire Libre “Paco Alonso-Fundación Unicaja”, the works focus thematically on the landscapes, views, aspects and artistic interpretations of Benagalbón. The Certamen takes place in Benagalbón as part of the Semana Cultural.

Routes and Activities

The SL-A 084 is a linear route 9 kilometres long for the round trip. The route takes approximately three hours, and its difficulty is low. It can be used on foot, by bicycle and on horseback. As an officially certified hiking trail, the SL-A 084 runs from Cerro Benagalbón to Cerro Tío Caña. Its length, approximate duration and the various ways of using it provide different points of reference for personal day planning.

The municipal bus route R-1 is available for the connection between the Centro Comercial and Benagalbón.

Festivals and Customs

The Feria de Benagalbón is dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria. The Feria de Benagalbón 2026 included a procession through the village streets. The 47th edition of the Semana Cultural de Benagalbón took place over ten days, from 24 April to 3 May, included more than 30 activities and is recognised as a Fiesta de Singularidad Turística of Málaga province.

The programme of this 47th Semana Cultural included a night orienteering event with registration and the start at Plaza de la Iglesia. A chocolate round with dessert tasting took place at Plaza de las Flores. In the countryside, the tradition of “sanmarquear” with hornazo was revived.

The programme of the 47th Semana Cultural de Benagalbón also included a performance of the Montes Verdiales style by the Escuela de Verdiales Benagalbón. In the Concurso Tradicional de Verdiales, two groups compete against each other in a “choque de pandas”, accelerating the Verdiales rhythm until one group makes a mistake.

Culinary Traditions

The traditional olive mill in Benagalbón offers the opportunity to learn about the production process of cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil.
