Discover Las Infantas: Landscapes, History and Air Sports

Las Infantas bears a name that points deep into the history of Jaén: it is associated with Fernando III’s siege of Jaén in 1245. During this siege, he housed his daughters there.

Landscape and Rural History

The Pago de Las Infantas area encompasses the floodplains of the Guadalbullón River as well as higher areas with gentle rises in the terrain. It is shaped by river deposits and runoff processes. The riverside plots in the Pago de Las Infantas along the Guadalbullón are used for growing vegetables, cotton and young olive groves.

This means that different landscape elements exist side by side in the same area: the floodplains near the river, the higher gentle rises and agriculturally used plots. The crops mentioned give the rural use a specific character, while the river deposits and runoff processes describe how this setting was formed.

The place’s historical name also points to its rural roots: a cortijo is documented for Las Infantas as early as 1378. In 1410, Las Infantas appears as Dehesa del Cortijo de Las Infantas. Both historical names form part of a chronological sequence through which the changing name of the area can be traced.

Industrial Legacy

The Las Infantas area was home to a former, now-disused factory associated with iron oxide used in the production of paints. The buildings of the former factory are considered reddish; their colouring is linked to the factory’s connection with iron oxide. This industrial legacy thus adds another aspect of the area’s history to its agricultural and historical context.

Air Sports and Public Spaces

The Aeródromo de las Infantas is located next to the Las Infantas settlement. The airfield offers introductory flights. Every year, scoring competitions are held there for the FAE League, the Andalusian Championship and the Jaén City Championship (Air Xauen).

The two formats therefore differ clearly in character: one serves to introduce people to flying, while the other involves scoring in organised competition.

Plaza Infanta Cristina in Las Infantas has a certified children’s play area that is open and approved for use.

Festivals and Traditions

Carnival celebrations in Las Infantas have been announced for 8 February, with performances by several groups, as well as a separate celebration on 15 February. The two dates have different programme items: performances by several groups are listed for 8 February, while 15 February is announced as a separate celebration.

Traditional festivals in honour of San Isidro Labrador are held in Las Infantas. These festivals include a Mass. The programme also features a traditional procession with Cabezudos. The Mass and procession are therefore explicitly named components of this festival tradition.
