Guarromán: History, Dehesa and Festivals

The historic town centre of Guarromán is listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Conjunto Histórico category. The protected town centre preserves a regular, hierarchically arranged grid layout that represents the urban planning of the Enlightenment.

Culture and History

The Santuario de Zocueca in Guarromán is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages; the present building was constructed in the 17th century, and one of Andalusia’s most magnificent Baroque camarines was added in the 18th century. The Santuario de Zocueca is used weekly for religious services and is the setting for a pilgrimage on the last Sunday in September.

The Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción was the first parish church built in the Nuevas Poblaciones. Its simple façade is made of red sandstone and features a small portal, three small openings and a colonial-style bell gable. Inside are a sculpture of the Immaculate Conception by Jacinto Higueras and a high altar originating from the Iglesia de San Nicolás in Úbeda.

Construction of the Pósito de Labradores was completed in 1789. The building has thick walls faced with sandstone blocks and load-bearing interior arches. At the same time, the Pósito de Labradores preserves the colonial typology of buildings used to store grain and seed, as well as to control, regulate and redistribute their production.

The Palacio del Intendente dates from 1807. A sundial is located on one corner; it was installed to show the time to the stagecoaches that stopped at the post station. Its courtyard preserves the architecture and atmosphere of the 18th century.

The Monumento al Sagrado Corazón de Jesús stands on the promenade of the same name atop a tall rusticated pillar surrounded by a railing. It was created in 1950 by the Sales brothers from La Carolina. After religious images were destroyed in 1937, a public referendum decided that this sculpture should be erected.

Nature and Mining Heritage

The Sendero de Piedras del Chantre connects a landscape of holm oaks and grain fields with the mining heritage characteristic of the area. The first section leads to the Mina del Porvenir Oscuro, where traces of the former mining and smelting industry can still be seen. The second section leads into a Mediterranean Dehesa landscape with holm oaks and mastic shrubs, where Iberian lynxes and Spanish imperial eagles, among other species, can be found.

Festivals and Specialities

The Fiestas del Fuero take place on the weekend closest to 26 October. They commemorate the promulgation of the Fuero of 1767 and include historical costumes, music, tastings and a handicraft market.

Pintahuevos is an Easter tradition brought by German colonists. It involves decorating boiled eggs, which are then made part of a pipirrana. Guarromán’s best-known speciality is puff pastry: this includes the “pasteles rubios”, filled with angel hair, and the “pasteles blancos”, covered with icing sugar.

The Feria y Fiestas del Olivar takes place in July around the feast of Santiago and includes various activities for children and adults, as well as traditional outdoor festivities. During a theatrical route, residents of Guarromán recount the history of the municipality at representative locations around the town.

The Romería de San Isidro takes place on the third Sunday in May in the Dehesa Piedra Rodadera on the banks of the Río Guadiel.
