Coto-Ríos: Nature, Hiking Trails and Santiago Apóstol

Hiking and Trails

The fourth stage of the GR-7 begins in Coto-Ríos; its initial section bears the red and white markings of the long-distance trail.

The second stage of the GR 247.2 variant also starts here and reaches the Río Borosa at the starting point of the Borosa trail. It is 15.75 kilometres long, with an estimated walking time of 5 hours and 41 minutes. At kilometre 6.3, it passes Torre del Vinagre.

The route along the Río Aguamulas also begins in Coto-Ríos and runs through ferns, moss and pine forests along a short tributary of the Guadalquivir that rises below Las Banderillas.

The route along the Río Borosa starts in the car park of the fish farm next to the Torre del Vinagre visitor centre, in the vicinity of Coto-Ríos.

The 21-kilometre Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente route also passes through the Coto-Ríos area; it includes five viewpoints. The various route lengths and the stated walking time provide an objective basis for comparing the time required for your own plans.

Nature

The Chopera de Coto-Ríos is located in dense pine forest and features riverside vegetation. On site, there are wooden tables and benches, a kiosk bar and a shaded pergola.

At the Piscifactoría del Borosa, a pleasant circular path leads past springs, benches and several viewpoints. Semi-free-ranging deer, ibex, fallow deer and mouflon can be observed and photographed there.

There is also a botanical garden near the Piscifactoría del Borosa, with a carefully selected range of plants from the nature park, from small herbaceous plants to large trees.

Visitor Centres

The Torre del Vinagre visitor centre features audiovisual projections, an interactive topographic model, an exhibition area for children and five areas dedicated to interpreting the landscape.

Guided tours and workshops there help visitors discover the natural and cultural values of the protected area.

The Río Borosa River Interpretation Centre explains the nature park’s river network and the Río Borosa catchment area using a graphic display and a topographic model. Along a tour beside the river and through the sculptural-looking riverside forest, it also presents the aquatic fauna.

At the Collado del Almendral Wildlife Centre, the programme includes a guided ride on a tourist train and a circular walking route.

Culture

Coto-Ríos was established in the 20th century as a colonisation settlement for residents of scattered cortijadas and small hamlets. The relocation of these residents was connected with the establishment of the Coto Nacional de Caza Cazorla–Segura and a new water policy.

The Church of San Miguel Arcángel in Coto-Ríos is a white place of worship with a striking façade made of dressed stone and blue ceramic tiles.

Santiago Apóstol is celebrated in Coto-Ríos; the traditional Santiago Apóstol celebration includes a pilgrimage from Torre del Vinagre to the settlement.

The festivities end with a communal feast organised by the brotherhood and local residents.
