Cortijos Nuevos: El Yelmo, Nature Park and Festivals
Cortijos Nuevos is located in the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas Nature Park. The village is considered one of the most important starting points for reaching destinations throughout the Sierra de Segura.
Landscape
An east–west livestock trail for transhumance runs through Cortijos Nuevos, coming from the high mountains of the Sierra de Segura. Route 2 “Cortijos Nuevos–Pico de El Yelmo” offers one option on foot and one by car for travelling to El Yelmo. Via a path, it leads to Castillo de Gutamarta and reaches the summit of El Yelmo at an altitude of 1,809 metres.
There are numerous caves on the western slope of El Yelmo where caving can be practised. The summit also has a launch site for free flight. From the road from Beas de Segura via the Collado del Puerto, there is a view of El Yelmo, Segura de la Sierra and Hornos.
Routes and activities
Route 1 “Cortijos Nuevos–La Tiná Nueva” begins in Cortijos Nuevos and follows the A-314 towards Beas de Segura. Route 3 “Cortijos Nuevos–Cortijo de Romillán” heads towards the Cortijo de Romillán area and crosses the Río Trujala via the Puente del Moro.
El Contadero Aventuras in Cortijos Nuevos offers mountain bike tours with specialised guides. El Contadero Aventuras also offers an orienteering course in the forest. In Cortijos Nuevos, routes to El Yelmo, mountain bike tours and an orienteering course therefore cater to different ways of getting around.
Festivals and culture
The Festival Internacional del Aire includes air sports, films about flying, sporting activities, flight demonstrations and a trade fair. It takes place in early June at and around the football pitch in Cortijos Nuevos.
The festival in honour of the Virgen del Pilar, the patron saint of Cortijos Nuevos, is celebrated in Cortijos Nuevos on 12 October. The celebration includes a procession through the village streets.
The traditional pilgrimage of San Isidro, associated with Cortijos Nuevos, takes place on 15 May in the La Lomilla area next to the hamlet of El Ojuelo. Cortijos Nuevos is listed as the venue for the Valle Absoluta round of the XXII Memorial “Santiago González Santoro” de Bolos Serranos on 6 June 2026.
Getting there
The A-319 provides a connection from the area near Cortijos Nuevos to the Tranco Reservoir, Coto Ríos and Cazorla; it is reached from the A-317 approximately two kilometres from Cortijos Nuevos. The A-314 runs via the Collado del Puerto and Cañada Catena towards Beas de Segura and the N-322.
Local character
Olive oil with the designation of origin “Sierra de Segura” is produced by the La Casilla and El Ojuelo cooperatives. Traditional home slaughtering of pigs is common in Cortijos Nuevos; morcillas, chorizos and other sausage products are made in the process.
