With the Castillo de Canena, Canena is home to a Renaissance building constructed in the 16th century by the Spanish Renaissance architect Andrés de Vandelvira (1509–1575). As a Bien de Interés Cultural, the building is protected.
Culture and History
The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción was built in the first half of the 16th century in the Renaissance style. It has a robust Almohad crypt dating from around the year 1000. The Museo de las Telecomunicaciones de Canena provides an overview of the development of telecommunications – from the earliest systems for communicating over distances to satellite and internet connections. It displays numerous exhibits, many of them still functional, from the fields of terminal devices, switching, transmission, cables, radio and satellite technology.
Molinillo is a hydraulic installation from Roman times that was used to grind grain. The Balneario de San Andrés has thermal waters whose use dates back to Roman times. It is currently the only operating spa in the province of Jaén. You can give historical architecture, the history of technology and thermal waters different emphasis as separate focal points in your planning.
Landscape and Trails
In La Loma in the province of Jaén, an extensive sea of olive trees characterizes the landscape. Numerous roads and hiking trails cross the municipality of Canena and offer viewpoints with panoramic views across the La Loma comarca.
For your planning, you can consider nature and outdoor activities as a separate focus alongside the cultural sites. When comparing holiday apartments in Canena, you can check travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions side by side on the respective offer pages. Based on your own priorities, you can determine during your personal travel planning which type of stay suits your plans.
Festivals and Music
The Festival de Música Villa de Canena takes place every year on weekends in July and uses the Castillo de Canena as its venue. The Festival Villa de Canena includes summer concerts in the Auditorio and in the Columnas and Armas courtyards of the castle, including classical music, opera, jazz and other styles.
The Fiestas de la Virgen de los Remedios in Canena take place from 14 to 25 August. The Fiestas include a procession with the image of the Virgin Mary, a sculpture by the sculptor Navas Parejo. Public open-air dances are also part of the Fiestas. You can use fixed music and festival dates as a time reference and give culture or trails different emphasis regardless of them.
