Discover Castañuelo: Archaeology, Trails and Festivals

Castañuelo draws attention to El Castañuelo, an archaeological site. It comprises a necropolis dating from around the 2nd millennium BC, an Iron Age settlement from the 5th and 4th centuries BC, and a third area whose chronology extends into the Roman period.

Culture

Finds from El Castañuelo include ceramic vessels, grave goods, figurines and carvings made of bronze and other materials, as well as jewellery made of precious metals. A large part of these finds is exhibited at the Museo Provincial de Huelva.

In the village landscape, the houses of Castañuelo combine whitewashed surfaces with stone. The vernacular architecture and urban structure are considered characteristic of the Sierra de Aracena. Castañuelo lies on the ravine of the same name, while the houses are arranged in tiers along the shape of the terrain.

The origins of Castañuelo are associated with medieval resettlements. Castañuelo is linked to traditional watermills of the Rodezno type. Castañuelo's ethnographic heritage includes traditions passed down through generations.

Trails and Landscape

The Sendero Yacimiento del Castañuelo combines geobotanical and cultural-historical aspects. Access is via the HU-8125 near kilometre 4. Castañuelo is one of six settlements belonging to Aracena that were connected by restoring and signposting old paths.

The trail alternates between an area of eucalyptus forestry and an extensive holm oak dehesa. Its final section offers a wide panorama of Castañuelo, which lies in the valley extending north of the trail. When planning, the different landscapes can be considered as separate trail and viewpoint highlights.

Nature

From the Mirador del Castañuelo, a mosaic of vegetation consisting of holm oak dehesas, cork oaks and small oak groves can be seen. The viewpoint can serve as an open observation point for spotting various birds of prey, including vultures, golden eagles and kites.

Festivals and Wine

Castañuelo's patron saint's festival in honour of Ntra. Sra. de la Esperanza takes place in August. The Fiesta del Mosto takes place in December.

The winemaking tradition gave rise to the Fiesta del Mosto. It developed from a small celebration among neighbours and friends into a tourist attraction that is drawing increasingly larger crowds.
