Culture and History

The Iglesia Parroquial Virgen de la Paz is a 16th-century Mudéjar temple built on the site of an Arab hermitage. It also houses an 18th-century altarpiece of considerable artistic and sculptural value.

The Vía Crucis of Otura comprises twelve stations; eleven each have a cross, while the Calvary station features the characteristic three crosses. The Acueducto El Arco is considered Otura’s only civil monument and carries water from the Acequia de Otura.

The Monumento conmemorativo al caballero 24 is a memorial dating from 1815 and is located at the entrance to the Centro Sociocultural Federico García Lorca. The Casa del Marqués de Dílar on Calle Acequia housed two separate classrooms in the 1940s and 1950s: one for girls and one for boys.

Nature and Routes

The Puerto del Suspiro del Moro is a mountain pass in the municipality of Otura. The Fuente de la Teja is a natural area in the ravines of the Río Dílar below the Molino Alto.

A large pilgrimage used to take place at the Fuente de la Teja in July; over time, it was lost. The Ruta Suspiro del Moro is a hiking route described in Otura whose course leads through the agricultural fields of the Vega, along irrigation channels and through areas of the former tram network to the landscape associated with the legend of the Suspiro del Moro.

The short version is eight kilometres long, of moderate difficulty and estimated to take approximately two and a half hours to walk. For planning purposes, the distance, difficulty level and approximate walking time can be considered separately.

Festivals and Local Cuisine

During the festival of San Blas, the loaves of bread and roscas brought by residents of Otura and even from nearby municipalities are blessed. The San Marcos tradition, also known as “Ahorcar al diablo” or the “Day of the Hornazos”, includes the hornazo, an oil-baked bread roll with a boiled egg in the middle, and is celebrated in the countryside.

Otura’s patron saint festival in honour of the Virgen de la Aurora takes place on 8 September. The Feria de la Tapa “Suspiro del Moro” is a gastronomic event in Otura in which ten bars and restaurants took part.

For 28 March, the Apache Hybrid Race was announced for the second consecutive year at the Pabellón Municipal “El Deyre” in Otura. The fitness competition combines eight 400-metre runs with eight functional exercises, alternating between them.
