Culture and Villagescape

Lobras preserves its Moorish village layout: the houses are grouped around the church and square. Flowers and flowerpots line the narrow streets bordered by white houses. At the Centro de interpretación de la Música Lombarda, a collection of musical instruments offers a journey through the sounds of the world. The centre displays instruments from the “El viaje de Lúa” collection.

Culture and History

The Acequia de Tímar-Lobras is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural because of its historical, ethnological and natural value. In Lobras, the BIC designation also includes the Minas Rodríguez-Acosta as a designated industrial mining heritage area.

The Museo del Malacate in Tímar presents the region’s mercury mining, from the extraction of cinnabar to the operation of the factories. It also covers ethnological traditions such as weaving, silkworm breeding and traditional songs, as well as agricultural tools. Visiting the Museo del Malacate requires an appointment in advance.

Landscape and Trails

The Camino Viejo between Juviles and Tímar is approximately 3.5 kilometres long and paved for much of its route. Peñón Hundío combines very old ceramic and settlement traces, possibly dating back to the Middle Ages, with a landscape of terraced farmland. Piedra Amarilla is associated with ibex, birds of prey and climbers.

The GR-7 E4 reaches Lobras from Cádiar and then continues through almond and olive terraces to Tímar, which can be reached from Lobras in approximately 40 minutes. On the GR-142 Senda de La Alpujarra, you can walk eastwards to Cádiar or westwards to Nieles. The Acequia de los Castaños circular route is approximately 2.4 kilometres long, takes about 40 minutes, follows a linear route and is classified as easy. The different distances and time estimates make the routes easy to compare.

Church and Festivals

The Iglesia Parroquial de San Agustín is located at the entrance to Lobras. Access to the church is free. It is listed in the Patrimonio Inmueble de Andalucía. The tower is the oldest element of today’s Iglesia Parroquial de San Agustín and adjoins the small main chapel.

The Fiestas de San Agustín in Lobras on 28 and 29 August include the Entierro de la Zorra and the Baile de la Era, with traditional games and competitions accompanied by a band. At the San Marcos festival on 25 April, people share a meal in the countryside featuring salchichón from the home slaughter, hornazo, olives seasoned with sun-dried tomatoes and wine from their own harvest.
