Roquetas de Mar – Coast, Dunes and History

Roquetas de Mar is located on the coast west of the city of Almería and encompasses 16 km of the Almería coastline, including 15 km of beaches. For your planning, you can weigh beach, nature, sea and culture as different areas of focus.

Coast and Beaches

Playa de Cerrillos is 2,620 m long and lies within the protected Punta Entinas-Sabinar natural area. With the exception of this beach, the beaches of Roquetas de Mar are urban beaches. They have road access, seasonal daily cleaning, police monitoring, first-aid stations and their own ambulance service.

Playa de Las Salinas is a 1,330 m-long urban beach; its name derives from the former salt pans of San Rafael. A wide variety of water sports is possible at this beach. In front of Playa de Cerrillos and other beaches along the coast of Roquetas de Mar, there are Posidonia seagrass meadows, where diving is considered particularly impressive.

Nature

The Punta Entinas-Sabinar natural area has numerous paths suitable for cycling and hiking tours; it also offers good opportunities for birdwatching. The area is a coastal environment with living dunes up to 7 m high, salt-tolerant vegetation such as juniper stands, mastic shrubs and halophytes, as well as temporary lagoons and ponds.

The temporary lagoons of Punta Entinas-Sabinar attract waterbirds and migratory birds, including flamingos, grey herons, avocets and ducks. Cycling and hiking tours, birdwatching and the coastal landscape are presented here as distinct themes alongside one another.

History

The Ribera de la Algaida o de Turaniana archaeological zone in Roquetas de Mar (Almería) is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural. The archaeological site shows a sequence from the Argaric Middle Bronze Age through to the Middle Ages and includes significant finds from the Roman era. The site also includes the so-called Puerto de los Bajos, which was used as an anchorage.

Castillo de Santa Ana is a 17th-century fortress. During attacks by pirates and corsairs, it served as a refuge for the inhabitants of Roquetas de Mar. The Castillo houses exhibition rooms and provides space for lectures, concerts and performances in the courtyard.

Culture by the Sea

The restored Faro de Roquetas de Mar is used for cultural purposes and houses an exhibition room. The Aula del Mar is located in the harbour, an interactive museum where visitors can respectfully discover and experience the city’s connection to the sea. Traditional fishing equipment from Roquetas de Mar is displayed there, and the development of local fishing is explained.
