Pechina: Bayyana, Sierra Alhamilla and green oasis

In Pechina, a special irrigated area at the first foothills of the Sierra Alhamilla forms a green oasis amid great aridity and offers views of the blue silhouette of the Mediterranean.

History

Pechina was the dominant Bayyana described by Arab geographers—the origin and mother city of Almería.

The Centro de Interpretación de Bayyana displays models of a water wheel powered by draft animals and an authentic Arab pottery kiln. It presents Hispano-Muslim culture through the themes of the city, domestic and social life, spirituality, silk and ceramics, water and agriculture, and trade.

The archaeological site of Bayyana preserves a residential quarter surrounded by a craft area with pottery workshops and a glass furnace. It also includes an ancient cemetery and straight avenues that divided the city into three areas.

The Ermita de San Indalecio has a façade with a base made of ashlar stones and a basket-handle arch. It has been documented since the 15th century.

El Chorrillo in Pechina was a monumental film set for “Exodus: Gods and Kings” (2014) and was later used again for “Game of Thrones” (2016).

To access the archaeological site of Bayyana and the Centro de Interpretación de Bayyana, opening hours must be arranged with Pechina Town Hall.

Nature

The Los Baños de Sierra Alhamilla hiking trail (SL-A 162) leaves Pechina via Fonda, Colón, Bailen and Rioja streets and follows the former railway line on its way to the baths.

The trail ends at an oasis amid a dry mountain landscape.

The Balneario de Sierra Alhamilla uses hyperthermal springs at 58°C for drinking cures and hydrotherapeutic treatments.

Festivals

The Caldo Minero Festival combines flamenco performances in the Sierra Alhamilla on the first Saturday in August with a tasting of the traditional Caldo Minero and lasts an entire weekend.

The Verbena Membrillo offers traditionally made quince sweets and traditional games reminiscent of earlier times on the last Sunday in October.

The celebration of San Indalecio on 15 May includes a procession from the church to the hermitage, during which the saint is carried on a small boat.

The Zoco árabe Bayyana takes place in July.
