Nijar: History, Crafts and Paths Through the Landscape

Níjar offers a specific gateway to history, crafts and the landscape. The parish church, Atalaya, museums, workshops and the S15 Sendero de los Molinos–Huebro GR-140 represent different facets of the town. This thematic range helps visitors consider cultural sights and a landscape trail separately, rather than reducing Níjar to a single theme.

Culture

The parish church of Santa María de la Anunciación was built in the 16th century at the behest of Bishop Antonio Corrionero. It has a defensive function and retains its original clock. The Atalaya de Níjar dates from 1574 and is the only surviving above-ground element of the former Arab fortress. Arab origins are particularly evident in the Atalaya district.

The Villa de Níjar was officially declared a Zona de Interés Artesanal because of the historical and cultural significance of its craft activity. This includes seven workshops where pottery, ceramics, flat-woven fabrics or Jarapas, and wind instruments made from pita wood are produced. Jarapas, pottery and esparto processing are also part of Níjar’s traditional craft identity.

The Museo La Casa de Los Artesanos is dedicated to Níjar’s deeply rooted craft traditions and its heritage of pottery, hand-painted ceramics and Jarapa weaving. The Museo del Agua is a municipal cultural centre in the old town of the Villa de Níjar. Its information panels cover the history of Níjar’s first inhabitants, the Alumbres de Rodalquilar, the Hispano-Muslim period, livestock farming and dryland agriculture, the Isabel II reservoir, the colonisation settlements and modern desalination techniques. The museum also explains the importance of water and its management over time in the arid Campo de Níjar.

Landscape

The viewpoint at the Atalaya offers far-reaching panoramic views of the Villa de Níjar and Cabo de Gata. On the Cerro de la Atalaya in Níjar, there are two landscape observatories established after a path and its surroundings were enhanced. The S15 Sendero de los Molinos–Huebro leads through a lush ravine with orchards and watermills to a viewpoint; the area is recognised as a Paisaje de Interés Cultural de Andalucía.

Hiking

The S15 Sendero de los Molinos–Huebro GR-140 is a linear hiking trail of moderate difficulty, 2.55 km long, which ends in Níjar. The trail passes the remains of more than 22 watermills associated with grain milling. The Mirador de la Atalaya de Níjar can be reached on foot from the centre of the Villa de Níjar. The trail type, length and difficulty provide clear points of comparison when you want to assess the landscape trail alongside the cultural sights.
