Culture

The complex of the noria, washhouse and livestock watering trough includes an animal-powered waterwheel. It directed water to the public washhouse and public livestock watering trough. The complex was built at the beginning of the 20th century by a large landowner who used surplus water to irrigate his land; the facility remained in use until the 1980s.

In Níjar’s official festival calendar for 2026, the local celebrations in El Pozo de los Frailes were scheduled for 24 to 26 July.

Location and Information

From San José towards Níjar, El Pozo de los Frailes is located two kilometres away on the AL-3108. In the village centre, next to the restored noria, you will find the Noria del Pozo de los Frailes information point. It is a small kiosk in a landscaped area and provides information about Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park.

Nature and Hiking Trails

The S04 hiking trail crosses various habitats within Cabo de Gata-Níjar Geopark and Biosphere Reserve. At the same time, it directly connects El Pozo de los Frailes with San José via the AL-3108 and can be accessed from either village.

The S06 Escullos–Pozo de los Frailes hiking trail passes through hilly terrain between volcanic mountains, offers sea views and runs past abandoned grain fields. Along this trail, you can observe, among others, the great bustard, the kestrel, the migratory Tarabilla, a relative of the European stonechat, the ocellated lizard and the horseshoe snake.

The Cerro de los Frailes is located along hiking trail S06, and its two volcanic domes reach an elevation of 493 metres. It is considered the largest volcanic outcrop in the natural park. The different trail profiles give you a clear basis for weighing natural and cultural highlights against each other.
