Discover Canjáyar – Culture, Nature and Holiday Apartments

Canjáyar can be explored through its murals, buildings, places of remembrance and trails. At the Museo Abierto de Canjáyar, 22 artistic murals depict episodes from the town’s history. All 22 murals are located along six streets and can be visited on one continuous circular route.

Culture and History

The Iglesia Parroquial de la Santa Cruz del Voto was built around 1530 and features a Neoclassical style with some Mudéjar details. Earthquakes in 1804 and 1852 damaged the church; it was subsequently repaired and extended. Most of its current structure dates from the 19th century.

The Ermita de San Blas was built in 1880 on the hill where the Arab castle had previously stood. On Cerro de San Blas, cave houses remain as remnants of a troglodytic settlement form. The Ermita de San Blas offers panoramic views over Canjáyar and towards the Sierra de Gádor. The Templete de la Cruz Blanca houses the pillar of the original cross.

La Fuente Larga was built in 1885 to a design by the architect López Rull. The Monumento al Parralero on Plaza Nueva commemorates the farmers who cultivated grapevines for many years, exporting their Ohanes table grapes to other countries. The Lavadero Público has 17 wash basins and recalls the time when the town’s women would meet there to do their washing.

Religious Traditions and Festivities

Santa Cruz del Voto, the patron saint of Canjáyar, was discovered on 19 April 1611 in the wall of the baptistery of Canjáyar’s parish church. The Templete de la Cruz Blanca is the destination of the procession with Santa Cruz del Voto, held every year on 19 April.

Canjáyar’s patron-saint festivities in honour of Santa Cruz del Voto take place from 19 to 22 April. On Día del Santo, a procession and pilgrimage lead to the Ermita de San Blas; it ends with a Mass and a tasting of typical regional products.
