Vrhnika combines cultural history with a landscape of springs, wooded hills and varied trails. Between the literary heritage of Ivan Cankar, Roman traces and the landscape around Močilnik, the town reveals a diverse character.

Culture and history

The Cankar Memorial House is located in the house where the writer Ivan Cankar was born in 1876 and is designated as a cultural monument. The house preserves furniture and other furnishings from the late 19th century, illustrating the everyday life of the Cankar family. A three-hour guided version of the “Pot Cankarjeve mladosti” trail includes a visit to the Cankar Memorial House. The trail itself ends in Močilnik at the springs of the Ljubljanica.

The Roman past is also visible in several places. In Turnovše, the remains of a Roman watchtower have been preserved; it was part of the Claustra Alpium Iuliarum fortification system. Next to the cemetery in Vrhnika, part of the corner tower of a pentagonal Roman fortification has also been preserved. The guided “A Walk Through History” city tour through the centre of Vrhnika lasts about two hours. It presents Roman Vrhnika as Nauportus and includes visible remains of the Roman defensive wall of Claustra Alpium Iuliarum.

Another historical site is “Time Station Vrhnika”. The exhibition is located in the renovated Vrhnika–Trg railway station, later Vrhnika’s urban railway station, and explores the history of transport in the Vrhnika area. It includes an interactive quiz; “Time Station Vrhnika” also offers a virtual train journey through various historical time stations. The “Ljubljanica River Exhibition” in Vrhnika has ceased its activities.

Springs and landscape

Močilnik is a spring valley where the Veliki Močilnik and Mali Močilnik springs flow into the Mala Ljubljanica. The Veliki Močilnik spring emerges beneath 40-metre-high cliffs, also known as Hudičeve skale. Above the bridge at the spring in the Močilnik valley, the rock imprint “Jazonova pest” is carved into the rock.

Above Vrhnika lies the wooded Planina at an altitude of 733 metres. It is home to a mountain hut and a 22-metre-high observation tower. Planina is a junction for several hiking trails, including the European long-distance path E6. For the ascent, the “Pot čez Špico” trail leads to Planina as a somewhat steeper and shorter route. “Pot mimo Bukve”, on the other hand, is the gentler and slightly longer descent route from Planina.

Trails and experiences

The “Tempelj zmaja Lintverna” experience begins in Vrhnika and follows a 4.5-kilometre route in each direction, with the final kilometre being a mountain trail. The route is a loop and passes through a landscape with a stream, pools, small waterfalls and wild forest.

The “Pot Cankarjeve mladosti” trail combines literary history with the landscape of Močilnik, ending at the springs of the Ljubljanica. At the mountain hut on the summit of Planina, štruklji filled with plums are offered as a Vrhnika speciality.
