Holiday Apartment in Smrečje – Pilgrimage Routes, Church and Culture
Smrečje combines a centuries-old pilgrimage tradition with remarkable cultural traces and a landscape in which the distinctive features of Lake Račevsko jezero can be seen. The Church of the Assumption of Mary has been a gathering point for pilgrims for centuries, and pilgrimage routes have been leading to it in Smrečje for centuries.
Routes
A marked pilgrimage route begins in the old center of Podlipa and leads to the Church of the Assumption of Mary in Smrečje. Along the Podlipa–Smrečje pilgrimage route, there are benches where hikers can rest. At a moderate walking pace, the route takes about three hours and is also suitable for family outings. A longer hiking route leads from Smrečje via the Church of the Assumption of Mary and Lake Račevsko jezero to the mountain hut at Vrh sv. Treh Kraljev.
Culture
The Church of the Assumption of Mary stands in Smrečje at an elevation of about 715 meters and is attributed to the 10th or 12th century. The Rusova Chapel, a 19th-century chapel, stands nearby. A discovered fresco bears the year 1868. The chapel stands above a spring beside the former pilgrimage route to the church and is registered as immovable cultural heritage.
A historical detail has also been preserved in the Smrekar House: above the entrance, a keystone with a depiction of the Virgin Mary with the Child from the late 15th century has been built into the wall. At a commemorative event, traditional lace pieces by Julka Fortuna and Marija Oblak from Smrečje, as well as a more modern version made of colored yarn and used as a fashion accessory, were displayed.
History
The Kovtrov Mill tells the story of earlier work in the surrounding area. Historically, grain from Rovte, Ligojna and Stara Vrhnika was brought to the mill. A restored water wheel and a restored part of the inner mill mechanism bearing the engraved year 1822 have been preserved. Vinko Železnik continues to welcome visitor groups and introduce them to the historical work and life at the Kovtrov Mill.
Nature
Lake Račevsko jezero is a periodically water-filled lake that can dry out completely once a year. It lies at the transition between the Alpine and Dinaric worlds.
