Gorenje combines a multifaceted ecclesiastical history with marked trails, a lively community life and places of remembrance. Between the history of church architecture, cycling tours, hikes and local events, a diverse picture of the place emerges.

Culture

At the centre of the village of Gorenje stands the branch church of Saint John the Baptist. The building is a Baroque church with a late Gothic foundation. At the same time, its history probably reaches back to the late Middle Ages: at that time, the church was presumably built as a Romanesque baptistery. The chapel of the church of Saint John the Baptist was expanded between 1660 and 1730, while the chancel dates from the second half of the 18th century. Several construction phases are thus directly connected at a central location in the village.

Trails

The “Pot kulturne in naravne dediščine” route covers 7 kilometres through relatively easy terrain. It can be explored on foot or by bicycle. A guided tour of this route can be arranged with the Šmartno ob Paki Tourist Association. Another combination of exercise and local culture is the “Potepanje po okolici” cycling tour, which the Gorenje Cultural Association organises every year.

The “Pot spominov” memorial route also passes through Gorenje. It is approximately 18 kilometres long and can be completed in five hours at a moderate walking pace. The longer hike can be undertaken independently or with a guide.

Culture and Community Life

The Gorenje Cultural Association shapes the course of the year with several recurring events. Every year, it organises the Mother’s Day event “V pričakovanju pomladi”. The association also revives old customs and traditions every year with the arrival of Father Christmas and the presentation of gifts to children.

Theatre groups are also part of cultural life. In the village of Gorenje in the municipality of Šmartno ob Paki, there is a children’s group alongside the Gorenje Cultural Association’s adult theatre group. Its first performance, “Srote”, received a gold award at a national gathering of children’s theatre groups. Thus, alongside ecclesiastical history and hiking trails, community-supported stage performances are also at the heart of the village.

History

Another place of remembrance is located at the Gorenje–Šmartno ob Paki cemetery. A memorial to Stanko Zager stands there, bearing the inscription “ZAGERJEVI”. Stanko Zager was killed on 4 July 1944.

Regional Surroundings

In the wider regional surroundings of Šmartno ob Paki, a guided cycling tour through the vineyards can end at the Primožič winery, at the highest point of Mali vrh, with a wine tasting featuring a good wine.
