Holiday Apartment in Jareninski Dol – Culture, Wine and Trails
In Jareninski Dol stands the house at Jareninski Dol 64, a well-preserved example of Baroque rural architecture dating from the end of the 18th century.
Culture and History
The Alfi Nipič Museum presents a permanent exhibition about the life and musical career of the singer Alfi Nipič. On display are photographs, posters, audio and video material, articles, books, gold records, awards, plaques, medals and traditional clothing. In the museum cellar, a wine shop offers tastings of wine and sparkling wine from local winegrowers. The multipurpose hall in the attic is intended for musical performances as well as cultural and educational events. Cars and buses can park directly at the museum.
Above the southern part of the village, the round cemetery chapel of Jareninski Dol stands in the cemetery; it dates from the second half of the 19th century. It contains tombstones of priests and soldiers from Jarenina who fell in the First World War, as well as a sarcophagus and a depiction of the Crucified Christ. Next to the church stands the round ossuary of Saint Michael, with masonry dating from the 12th century. It is one of the rare surviving examples of this type of architecture in Slovenia.
The Church of the Assumption of Mary has a Late Gothic bell tower with an original stone roof, considered unique in Slovenia. Its nave is partly Romanesque and otherwise entirely Late Gothic. A plague column dating from 1532 stands along the road towards Šentilj. Jarenina was one of the Pražupnija and played an important role in the Slovenske gorice area.
The “Doživi Kulaka” project draws on the history of the film “Moj ata, socialistični kulak”, which was shot in Jarenina, and includes an exhibition and a festival.
Hiking and Cycling
The 21 km Pesnica–Jarenina cycling route explicitly passes through Jareninski Dol. The Jarenina hiking trail begins at Gostilna Lipa and covers an 18 km route through Jarenina, Vajgen, Polički Vrh, Vukovski Vrh and Vukovski Dol. Overall, the trail is considered less demanding, although some climbs include somewhat more strenuous sections, and it is suitable for recreational hikers.
Zmrzlek, known for its cold spring, is a sight along the Jarenina hiking trail. Nearby, Jareninski dvor, dating from 1074, stands on Polički Vrh. Until 1907, it was the economic and administrative seat of Admont Abbey for its properties in the Slovenske gorice.
Local Traditions
The Jarenina parish festival takes place on 15 August, the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. The Ovtar Jarenina Tourist Association presents the traditional dishes “Koruzni tomerl z jabolki” and “Jareninska gibanica”. In Jarenina, most of the older houses have been restored, while the village centre has preserved its characteristic appearance.
