Things to do
The Rakitna Forest and Archaeological Learning Trail offers an easy hike. It leads through forests and hay meadows, as well as along cart tracks, forest paths and meadow paths. The trail starts at Lake Rakitna, opposite Hotel Rakitna. At the beginning stands a 64-metre replica of a ship's mast; there is also a map showing the locations of 22 further information boards. The map at the beginning provides an overview of the locations of the other information boards along the trail.
The trail leads towards the former site of the Roman wall known as Claustra Alpium Iuliarum. There is a car park with a macadam surface at Lake Rakitna.
History
In December 1893, a huge fir tree was felled in the forest by Janez Opeka below the Selan farmstead to serve as the mast for a damaged ship in Trieste. The Rakitna Mast Trail runs through Rakitna from Selan to Vrnilce.
Culture
The church in Rakitna has two side chapels and two marble altars. It also has a handmade nativity scene made from tree roots, which attracts many visitors during the Christmas season.
