Discover Vače: Archaeological Heritage and Holiday Apartments

In the 6th and 5th centuries BC, Vače was one of the most important Hallstatt centres in Slovenia.

Archaeology and Culture

The Vače Archaeological Trail passes through one of Slovenia’s most important archaeological sites. Along the route, information boards introduce visitors to the world of situlas, prehistoric settlements and archaeological discoveries. The trail can begin or end at the Fossil Sea Coast near the cemetery. It is suitable for individual visitors as well as guided groups by prior arrangement.

A local collection devoted to the sights of Vače is housed in Dom GEOSS – Muzej Petra Svetika. It also includes an archaeological collection. The building’s geological collection presents the most important rocks found in Slovenia, thus complementing the view of the landscape with a natural-history perspective.

In nearby Klenik stands an enlarged replica of the Vače Situla. It can be reached via the Avenue of Creativity on prehistoric grounds. Using wooden statues by various artists, this avenue tells the story of Slovenian culture and ways of life.

The Church of St. Andrew also preserves specific historical evidence: it houses a sacristy bell from 1645 and a glass Holy Sepulchre from 1864. To visit the Church of St. Andrew, ring the bell at the house at Vače 18.

Trails around Vače

The GEOSS Circular Trail includes Vače and Klenik. Its route is signposted with signs and individual markings. Alongside the Archaeological Trail, this provides another route in the local area, whose course includes the two places of Vače and Klenik.

The trails combine different forms of exploration: information boards focus on situlas, prehistoric settlements and archaeological discoveries, while the replica of the Vače Situla can be reached via the Avenue of Creativity on prehistoric grounds.

Nature and Geology

The Fossil Sea Coast in Vače consists of an approximately 3-metre-high vertical limestone wall above the cemetery. Fossilised oyster shells up to 10 centimetres in size can be found at this Fossil Sea Coast in Vače. In 1997, a decree declaring the geological landmark in Vače a natural monument was prepared in the Municipality of Litija.

In the area around Vače, the Orjaški spust, the Giant Zipline at Pustolovski park Geoss, is 915 metres long in total. Also in the area around Vače, Pustolovski park Geoss offers seven climbing courses of varying difficulty, with 97 climbing elements at heights of 1 to 25 metres. Thus, in addition to the archaeological and geological sites, there are clearly named activities with courses and heights of varying kinds.
